Black Spirit of the Forests

The so-called black panther is not a separate species, but a rare genetic color variant of the leopard in Africa and Asia or the jaguar in Central and South America. Its deep black coloration results from a dominant or recessive melanism gene, which makes the typical spotted pattern only faintly visible beneath the dark surface.

No one knows exactly how many of these animals there really are. It is estimated that only around ten percent of all leopards or jaguars are melanistic – slightly more in some rainforest regions of Southeast Asia. Worldwide, there are probably only a few tens of thousands of black panthers in the wild.
