"Silence under the ice" – Dermechinus horridus Deep beneath the Antarctic ice, where no ray of sunlight reaches, lives a creature that seems as old as time itself – the Dermechinus horridus. It inhabits the silent plains of the Southern Ocean, mostly at depths between 200 and 1000 meters, where temperatures range from -1.5 to +2 degrees Celsius and the sea seems to breathe.

Its long, powerful spines protect it from sediment as it moves along It moves across the seabed. It feeds on dead material, cleans the deep sea, and ensures that the seabed continues to thrive – an invisible architect of marine balance. But its world is crumbling. Ocean acidification is attacking its calcareous shell, climate change is altering the oxygen content of the deep sea, and the exploitation of the seabed is destroying the layers in which it has survived for millennia.

It is the silent heart of Antarctica – slow, ancient, unwavering. A symbol that life flourishes even where we expect to find only emptiness. When the Dermechinus falls silent, the balance of the deep sea also falls silent.

Each Brandhoek work receives an original HAHNEMÜHLE certificate of authenticity and is additionally registered via VERISART, one of the leading international blockchain platforms for digital provenance.
